The KCSS Mini-Grant Program is designed to improve social studies instruction by providing financial assistance to classroom teachers. Past recipients have used grant funds in a variety of ways - to purchase instructional materials for classroom projects, for implementing new programs and for technology.
The 2011 winners have been selected!
Elementary:
Rochelle Butler
3rd grade
Madison-Virgil School District
Grant Title: Kansas in Color
Rochelle and her colleague, Cheryl Baysinger, will use the grant money to purchase a color printer, ink, and paper that will allow students to create projects such as a Madison History Book, timeline posters, a Memory Book of their school year and many more "colorful" projects.
Middle School:
Jennifer Kolb
6th grade
Lansing School District
Title of Grant: East Asia Project
Jennifer will use grant money to purchase interactive teaching aids to help her students learn about the geography, history, culture and contemporary issues of China and Japan. Some of the interactive items she plans to purchase include a digital atlas and interactive wall map.
Thanks to everyone who applied for a KCSS Classroom Mini-grant!
(Applications were judged according to the quality and clarity of information provided in the grant application. In particular, the committee members looked for alignment between the purpose of the project and specifically identified state curriculum standards, a clear and concise description on how the project would benefit students and whether or not the budget clearly outlined project purchases.)
